Linux RAID supports both hardware RAID and software RAID. Hardware RAID require

RAID controller

which specialize hard drive interface. This Raid controller will create array of disk and represent these as a single drive to the operation system. These methods in the hardware reduce the load on the system.
/usr/src/linux/documentation file has the information about raid controller can b referred to check Linux support the controller or not.

Software Raid


These abilities are the same as hardware version. The main different between the hardware Raid and software Raid is that software raid places a larger load on the system. Software raid support in the Linux kernel a suite of tools is available to set up and maintain Raid disk on the system.
